Brownsburg, IN—December 10th, 2004—The Performance Racing Industries Show in Indianapolis, Indiana December 9th-11th was the back drop for the official unveiling of the new FOZ Race Cars’ upright mini sprint. The well attended show provided the perfect opportunity to gather drivers, vendors, promoters and media for a first look at this exciting new race car. Hosted at John Godfrey’s Brownsburg, Indiana based production facility the evening provided visitors the opportunity to not only get an up-close look at the car, but to also experience the quality and detail that has resulted in Godfrey’s position as one of the top open wheel builders in the world.
The well equipped facility includes the latest in race car fabrication equipment. While visitors to the evening’s festivities frequently commented about the neat, clean appearance of the shop, anyone who has visited the shop prior to the open house realizes that the shop’s appearance did not require extra effort—neat, clean and organized is a way of life for Godfrey and his employees. One employee commented, “We clean everyday. If you don’t, things can get out of hand very quickly.”
Although Godfrey’s emphasis on organization pays dividends, the key to Godfrey’s production process is an experienced staff and the time spent building the necessary jigs and fixtures required to deliver quality and consistency. FOZ Race Cars’ Larry Fasse commented, “It has been really fun to watch and listen to folks marvel at the quality of the welds in this car.” This is all possible because of the experience of Godfrey’s staff. He has been able to re-assemble several of the original staff that helped him build Stealth into an open wheel powerhouse during his creation and ownership of the company. Although trite, the saying ‘quality is job 1’ is evident in every phase of production from cutting and bending the tubes to finish welds.
In addition to building the FOZ Race Cars’ mini-sprint, Godfrey has also returned to building midgets and sprint cars. Sprint cars are built under the Chalk Chassis logo, while Focus midgets and midgets are built under the Spike Chassis moniker. Visitors to the open house caught a first-hand glimpse of just how quickly production and demand for Godfrey’s creations has ramped. With the midget community hard at work readying for the rapidly approaching Chili Bowl, customer cars for the likes of Tracy Hines, Danny Stratton and the Fikes were all underway. With the books recently opened for mini sprint orders, production of several chassis were underway including a 1-3/8” tubed chassis being specially built for a customer in Colorado—the only organization in the country that requires this specification for their competitors.
Two visitors of note were Bob Douglas of the Midwest Outlaw Lightning Sprints and Jerry Tague of the American Mini Sprint Association. Tague commented, “Seeing this new car gets me even more excited about the upcoming season.” Tague has reason to be excited as he recently announced a two day national event for mini-sprints early in May at the Famed Lawrenceburg Speedway in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. The beautifully turned out, professionally run facility also announced mini sprint racing on the 1/4 mile, high banked oval on every other week during the 2005 season. “FOZ Race Cars’ Larry Fasse commented, “This holds the potential to be a great boost for the sport. The location of Lawrenceburg Speedway places it in close proximity to major metropolitan areas like Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton, Lexington, Louisville and Indianapolis. In fact one of our visitors tonight is looking to get into the sport because of the newly created opportunity to run at Lawrenceburg Speedway.”
Although the evening was a whirlwind of activity and faces, it provided attendees a great opportunity to do a little bench racing and discussion on the continued growth of the sport of mini sprint racing in 2005.
